The immune system is the like the army base of the body. It is made up of biological structures the protect the body from harmful bacteria and diseases. The body's first defense is a combination of physical and checmical barriers. The most widespread defense is the skin, Very few pathogens can get past the skin's surface, However, The skin doesnt cover everything some things are left unguarded. Such as eyes, nose, mouth, etc. The eyes, nose, and mouth have thier own defenses that protect them too.
The Immune system uses white blood cells to fight against viruses and diseases. They attack the virus directly to get rid of it. The Immune system tells the circulatory system where to send them, Then the white blood cells go on their journey to protect the body and defeat the enemy in your body. They're probably doing that right now!

Hashimoto's Disease
The Thyroid gland, as you see above, become enlarged and makes the body's Immune system think it is a foreign object. The immune system attacks the thyroid gland and causes the disease. This gland produces an important hormone, the thyroid hormone, and due to the Immune system's attacks, it cannot produce a sufficient amount one. The enlarged gland, called a goiter, may create a feeling of fullness in the throat but is usually not painful. After years, or even decades, the damage to the thyroid causes it to shrink and the goiter to disappear.
